The concept of building green homes has been around for decades but it is only recently that green home builders have grown in demand. Whether it’s because of constant news updates on erratic weather changes and waste accumulation, controversial documentaries or post-apocalyptic movies, more and more people are starting to become concerned for the environment. But what makes a green home green?

On the outside, an environmentally sound house looks just like any other house. It is when the house is broken apart into its basic construction elements that the eco-friendly qualities become more evident.

The wood used to construct the home frame and walls, for example, may be made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified lumber. The home builders may also have used low VOC paints, which give off reduced emissions and help maintain good indoor air quality. The insulation may be made from recycled glass and the plumbing system may be made using a more environmentally sound alternative to copper or other potentially harmful metals.

Green homes are also becoming popular because of their efficient use of energy. Since such houses are built to have the least possible impact on the environment, they consume less energy, making households more manageable in terms of expenses.

Green home builders have several standards to meet in order to ensure that they promote environmental friendliness. Energy Star and Environments for Living are two notable programs that certify home builders as proponents for the Environmental Movement. The latter organization designates several levels to measure the degree of sustainability provided by a home building company, the Platinum level being the highest.
