Going green is an expression that is constantly growing in popularity as more people are beginning to comprehend the effects that humanity has on the world’s natural resources. It’s time for a change and everyone can do their part to help preserve the earth’s precious resources. You can start by going green with electricity in your home. It takes a lot to generate electricity and saving even a little bit can add up to make a huge difference. If every home cut back on the amount of electricity they use per day imagine how much energy would be saved.
Lowering the amount of electricity you use is not as difficult as it might sound. There are many simple things that you can do to make a difference. The following ideas can help you get started.
o Replace all the light bulbs in your home with energy efficient bulbs.
o Always turn off the light when you leave the room even if you plan to return shortly.
o Check your place for cracks around the doors and windows. This is where much of the energy used to heat and cool homes is wasted. Seal off these areas and it will take less energy to keep your home comfortable.
o In the cold months, open curtains and let the sun shine in the home to help warm it up naturally. Pull them closed in the summer during the hottest part of the day to keep the heat out and it will take less electricity to cool the home.
o Unplug electronics when not in use. They continue to draw electricity even when they’re cut off.
o Whenever possible use ceiling fans or window fans to cool your home instead of the air conditioner.
o Use cold water to wash clothes instead of hot and whenever possible hang them outside on a clothes line where the sun can dry them naturally. When using a dryer it’s best to dry full loads at a time and on the shortest cycle needed.
o When buying new appliances, search for the ones that are eco friendly.
o Adding an alternative power source such as solar panels is a great way to save on the amount of electricity used in the home. This may not be something that you can do right away but you may be able to plan and eventually make the changes needed.
Using these tips to help save on the amount of energy you use will help to preserve the earth’s natural resources and you will also see a reduction in the electric bill that you pay each month. Even small changes can add up to make an impact especially when everyone is helping out.
