Incorporating eco-friendly practices and elements into home remodeling and interior design stopped being a trend a few years ago, and has become a major point of consideration for designers and homeowners everywhere. If you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen, there’s a way to go green here as well, by choosing eco-friendly cabinetry. Here are a few things to look for if you want to utilize eco-friendly cabinets in your next kitchen remodeling job.
Sustainable Forestry Program Certification
One step you can take towards ensuring that your wooden cabinets are eco-friendly is to make sure that the company you’re purchasing them from has an Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) certification. This means that their wood comes from a recognized sustainable forestry program. Look to see if the company you purchase from has Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) labels on their wood products. These are meant to show consumers that the amount of forest resources used to make the products were at a level that the forest was able to sustainably renew.
The ESP also awards points to wood product manufacturers who can prove that at least 80% of their products meet the low formaldehyde emissions levels required to be recognized by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Compwood ATCM. The materials used for the products must be tested and certified by a CARB-approved third-party lab in order for the manufacturer to be recognized. The CARB Compwood ATCM is the world’s lowest formaldehyde standard.
Find out what the cabinet maker’s manufacturing process is before you purchase their products. Do they have a good and consistent recycling program that helps reduce material waste or some kind of environmental management system in place? Manufacturers that implement such conservation programs help to greatly reduce pollutants, greenhouse gases and harmful emissions.
ESP certified cabinet manufacturers, as part of the certification criteria, must have a firm commitment to not just protecting the environment but also to demonstrate involvement in the community by donating to environmental organizations and finding other ways to improve their local environment.
