Most responsible adults have come to understand the importance of being kind to the earth by reducing their carbon footprint. The children of today will inherit our world, so it is important for kids to be aware of what is happening to the planet and what they can do to make a difference. It is up to us to raise eco-friendly kids who will know how to take care of their environment in the future. Most eco-friendly tips will also save money by conserving electricity and water at home, so your energy bill should improve a bit as well!

Most school itineraries include the importance of conserving and recycling. Depending on the age of your kids, they may have already received age appropriate lessons about reducing waste and the effects that chemicals and industrial waste are having on our environment. To find out, just ask. Your child should be able to tell you what he/she has already learned and if you think the lessons are lacking, you can supplement them with your own knowledge.

Raising eco-friendly kids means showing them the finer details of what to do to make a difference. Habits are learned early in life and these are the ones that you want them to keep with them far into adulthood. Following are some tips on raising eco-friendly kids that will help them get the message. Of course, you should always make sure any activities are age appropriate for your child but every age should have some involvement in reducing their carbon footprint:

o From the time your child is tall enough to reach the light switch until they are old enough to leave for college, they should always know to turn the lights off when they leave the room.

o Look for community activities that are designed to educate children about the environment.
Sometimes areas will have clean-ups that get rid of waste in streams and similar projects that help kids learn hands-on what is causing some of the problems we face.

o Recycle all of your plastics, paper, aluminum and anything that you can keep from throwing in the trash! If your child is old enough, put them in charge of the recycling bins.

o Grow an organic garden. Nothing is better than home grown vegetables and you will also provide a lesson in gardening without chemicals. You can also start your own compost pile beforehand and eliminate waste and put it to good use.

o Reduce the number of trips you take daily. Teach your child the importance of reducing fuel use early on since this is one of the biggest contributing factors to our pollution problems! Don’t run out for pizza, come back home and then decide to go to the mall. Learn to schedule your errands together as much as possible.

o Kids love learning about animals. Visit a zoo or do some reading about an endangered species, and talk about what can be done to help.

Raising eco friendly kids can be as easy as setting an example. Remember the importance of sticking with your plans and they will benefit in more ways than one!
